A change of events

“Explain to me,” Crow snapped. “Why the hell were you in that damn place when you are off the case?”

“I was looking for Lilly,” Alex said coolly. “You wouldn’t do it, so I took matters into my hands.”

“If you think I am risking any more of my agents for some criminal slut,” Crow snarled, “then you are crazy. Do you realize how bad this could have gotten? Do you realize what a mess we could have been in?”

“I realize everything,” Alex said. “But none of that happened, did it? I rescued an innocent man –.”

“You brought me back, Cane!” he shouted. “I have paperwork on my hands, and now I have to explain to the President how we got our hands on an assassin that we told the public had died years ago.”

“The FBI is always good at playing it off, aren’t they?” Alex asked. “Or maybe you could hide it under the frickin’ carpet? Are you good at that? I mean, when Gina died, you pulled it off like a pro. Do the same crap here.”

“You are getting on my nerves,” Crow said. “I can have you removed from your position.”

“Go ahead,” Alex said, leaning forward. “See if I care.”

Crow stared at him for a minute, knowing that Alex was past the point where he cared about anything Crow did to him. Just an hour ago, Alex had managed to rescue Sal from that place. Getting Sal out hadn’t been easy. It had involved his best efforts and his gunmanship skills. After killing two guards and injuring three, he had managed to reach Evans in the car he had waiting for them.

“Hey, that ain’t no chick,” Evans had commented as Alex had forced Sal in.

“Just go!” Alex had ordered as the guards continued to shoot at him.

“You got some weird preferences, man,” Evans had said, pressing down on the accelerator.

Bringing Sal back to the FBI had been Sal’s personal decision. He was tired of being on the run and asked Alex to take him with him. Alex reluctantly agreed, and Sal was in custody.

“Did you hear what he had to say?” Alex asked.

“Yea,” Crow said with a sigh. “They changed the date when you escaped; got a new location too. They didn’t want to risk you knowing too much and telling us everything. So, they changed it all up.”

“We know the new location?” Alex asked.

“Yea,” Crow said, pouring himself a drink. “Cane told us everything. I didn’t even have to ask him. I couldn’t believe he had been living right in plain sight all this time. Just a normal man, doing all those odd jobs. A perfect cover story about some family that no one would dare question.”

He took a sip of the whiskey and then leaned on his desk.

“I hate to think what would have happened if we had never gotten this information,” he said. “We would have been two days too late. The weapons would already have been exchanged by then, and they would be somewhere on a distant land.
